China is now the dominant manufacturing nation in the world. Many of the products that we use everyday were manufactured or assembled in China. The low cost of labor in China has created an incentive for corporations to move their manufacturing operations to China. For this reason there is a great demand for employees who can Speak Chinese. There are fantastic career opportunities for those who learn Chinese.
The Chinese language is actually a family of many languages and dialects. The version of Chinese most widely spoken is Mandarin Chinese. Over eight hundred fifty million people speak Mandarin as their native language. Another version of Chinese is Cantonese. The official language of the People’s Republic of China is Mandarin.
Many corporations that do business in China are seeking employees who can speak the language. Clearly, knowing the Chinese language is a qualification that employers find very attractive. This is because of the ascent of China as a major manufacturing power.
Learning any foreign language is a daunting task. It requires a huge commitment in time and diligence. Chinese, in particular, is a very difficult language to learn. There are now language learning programs that can make learning a language, like Chinese, much easier.
Mainland China is a very large country. Most of the Chinese people are in poverty. The country is ruled by a communist dictatorship. Over the past few decades China has become more open in terms of economic development and expansion. Event though China now has a thriving middle class and has experienced an increase in prosperity, the majority of the people still live in poverty. Most of the population live in the rural areas. These rural areas are undeveloped and should be considered third world. There is a lot of migration from the rural areas to the factory cities. China is definitely a nation in a state of transformation.
Where once only a few universities offered courses in Chinese, now many colleges and even some high schools teach Chinese. Business schools in particular encourage the study of Chinese. There are more private for profit language institutes that offer Chinese classes. In general, more people find it necessary to learn the language because of the business environment.
It was not that long ago when the Chinese government restricted travel to China. Now these restrictions have been somewhat relaxed. There are more people taking trips to China. While most travel to China is for business purposes, there is an increase in tourism. There are also more academics and scientists traveling to China for educational purposes. A foreign traveler in China must be aware of the laws and the customs of this country. They are very different than in the West.
